What is a URL Shortener and when to use it?

URL shorteners, such as Google's and Bitly's, are services that help take longer URLs and reduce them into manageable links that almost never exceed 20 characters. URL shorteners are perfect for when using Social Media sites with the likes of Twitter, Linkedin and Facebook.

One of the reasons that Google's and Bitly's URL shorteners have become so popular is because of the way that they present data results in the form of where the link was clicked, geographic location and how many times it was clicked.

For example we will be able to know which Social Media site produced the most referrals to this blog!

This type of information helps companies develop more targeted content.
